FOREWORD
THE geOgraphiced position of Kerai&
renders it specially important for the his-
torian and archaeologist. Cut off as it is
from the main peninsular India by the
Western Ghats its land communications
bfive always been difficult and. streams of
migration have tended to pass it by, ao the
predominance of .anoient yhyEical types on
ths Malabar Coast shows. The Rigvertic
immigrants, though they knew of Kerala j
do not appear to have reached it in eny
number? and ► as ancient traditions claim,
it ifi the land of Shiva, whose im&ge has
hcan found at Moheujo-Daro and who, it
is now generally agreed, is a pre-Rjgvedic
deity. The physical types of Kerala, the
Dravidim speech and, not the least, the
megalith* a monuments which Mr. Krishna
Iyer eo fully djescribesj all point to a link
With the Mediterranean by way of Asia
Minor, just as does the culture of Mohenjo-
ParO, and this link extends to the far
Western Isles of Europe in on® direction
and to Indonesia in the other. The author,
therefore, whan writing of the prehistoric
archaeology of Kerala is not dealing with
something of merely local interest hut with
relics, fortunately preserved by .partial
isolation, of what, to the best of our know-
ledge, has been the dominant culture of
the temperate and subtropical zone of
Europe find Asia in the third millartium
B. C.
There is every reason to hope that in
secluded Eurala ttier« have survived not
Only material remains of the remote past,
but. enshrined tin tradition and ancient
custom- invaluable does to the social and
religious culture of those Hines. All
scholars will, therefore, hope that this
treatise, bo which I have the honour of
contributing a foreword, will be followed
by others dealing with all s&peotsof Parami-
ramu'e land.
j, P. MILLS.
PREFACE
TT was Alexander Pope who said that
the proper study of mankind j$ man.
Modern trends tend to belittle the value
of scholarship and to nnder-rate arte and
humanities hi favour of the science^ The
partisans of science are never tired of
declaring that the proper 3tudy of mankind
is inanimate nature, hilt the weight and
dignity of tradition is on the aide of
humanitieE, “They stand for the ancient
manner, the exquisite gracB, the mellow
light, and the softer shadows of time, 5 '
Educated men and woman cannob ad-
equately discharge their duties as citizens
without an understanding- of the beliefs
arid motives underlying the daily obser-
vances and religious rites of rhoir fellow
citizens At a rime when primitive passions
run high even among civilized nations : the
need for the study of humanities {anchrc-
during the must impressionable
years of one’s life, seams all the greater.
The study by men of different rjmea and
religions of th.e customs and maimers of
one another may help in promoting: mutual
amity and knitting closely the bonds of
unity between them and eventually also
help m banishing much of the communal
animosity which is the bane of the national
life of the present day.
Animated by such thoughts, the Pre-
historic Archaeola&y of Kerala is being pub-
lished, as the first of a comprehensive
series under the general caption AVofq—
Past and Present in keeping with the Fan-
Kerala movement.
The author is deeply grateful to Mr,
J. P. Wills, Honorary Director of Ethno-
graphy, Assam, for his valuable foreword,
and to the Go varment of Travanuore for
the loan of the blocks.
